August 2018 Pro of the Month: Jon Finney

This month we’re featuring Jon Finney of Minuteman Sewer & Drain Cleaning in Marion-Jackson, MI.

Minuteman Sewer & Drain Cleaning’s motto is “We open drains others can’t.” General Manager Jon Finney has been with the company for 19 years. During that time, he’s come to depend on Spartan Tool equipment to help Minuteman deliver on that promise.

Jon Finney joined the team at Minuteman right out of high school. The company’s founder eventually sold Minuteman to Jon in 2003. In 2013, Jon sold to M&K Jetting, their parent company, and has been serving as the General Manager ever since.

Minuteman has used Spartan equipment since they opened; in fact, Jon was trained on Spartan equipment. They’ve found that Spartan machines are durable, reliable, and easy to service. Jon has built a strong relationship with Patrick Hogan, his Spartan Tool territory manager, who is very responsive when repairs are needed.

With over 20 trucks in their fleet and five equipped for residential drain cleaning with a full line of Spartan machines, keeping equipment functioning is imperative. Jon says, “Having durable equipment that’s easy to repair is crucial for no down time.” In fact, Minuteman purchased extra Spartan machines to have on hand as back-ups and they’re sitting on the shelf!

As a savvy businessman, Jon is always watching the market for new developments. He says he scoped out other drain cleaning manufacturers at the WWETT Show and didn’t find anything that compared to Spartan machines. He appreciates that everyone at Spartan, from the company’s president and engineers on down, are committed to building a durable product. Minuteman purchased a Model 300 in 1998 that’s still going strong!

Jon says the key to growing any company is recognizing that the number one priority should be to take care of its employees. If employees know the company has their best interests at heart, it builds loyalty and trust. These employees perform well and deliver the best service to their customers. Jon says, “Make sure you build a good quality team and take care of them. They’ll in turn take care of your customers, and your customers will take care of you.”

Minuteman Sewer & Drain Cleaning has experienced over 30% growth in the past three years. In 2018, they’re on pace for their best year ever. The company recently purchased a new building and are adding on to make room for their growing fleet. They’re also looking to expand into other major markets within 30 miles of their current location to steadily increase their service area. With this expansion, they plan to bring more service techs on their team.
