Sewer Nozzle Maintenance and Nozzle Safety



Sewer jetting nozzles are typically used in harsh environments. Just as the force of high-pressure water works to clean the pipe walls, this force also works to wear-down the small nozzle orifices that direct the flow of water. Over time, these orifices will degrade and begin to lose their cleaning power. Hard water calcification and small debris particles will also form deposits inside the nozzle orifice, eventually degrading the nozzle performance to the point where the nozzle must either be cleaned or replaced.

Other types of nozzles have replaceable orifices that simply screw on and off the nozzle head for easy maintenance. Noticing a loss of water pressure when performing a jetting job? This simple test will indicate whether your sewer nozzle is providing less than maximum cleaning power:The easiest approach is to simply replace the nozzle with a new nozzle - if the pressure is significantly higher, the older nozzle needs cleaning or replacement. Another quick troubleshooting technique is to remove the nozzle and perform a simple flow test - using just the jetting hose, fill a 5-gallon bucket and record the time it takes to fill the bucket. If your flow rate should be four gallons per minute you can quickly determine whether the reduced flow rate is due to the jetting nozzle or some other issue with the jetter.

Serious injury or even death can and has occured due to the improper handling of high-pressure jetting tools. In fact, the WaterJet Technology Association provides emergency medical cards advising doctors to treat waterjet injuries similar to a gunshot wound. Getting struck by a stainless steel nozzle exiting a sewer pipe at high speed can also cause severe injury and death. To mitigate these risks, Spartan Tool always recommends the use of a leader hose and full personal protective clothing to protect against injury.
